That broad, jagged, horizontal band across the mountains was a real source of geological curiosity and fascination for Team Whooz, who tried several ways of getting closer looks.
The whole Salt Lake region was a scenic wonder. This formation is beside the route to Promontory.
This is the former Morton-Thiokol (now ATK Launch Systems Group) complex near Promontory. Thiokol was the outfit that designed, built, and maintained the Space Shuttle solid rocket boosters, one of which failed and caused the Challenger liftoff disaster in 1986. The company, in various corporate guises, has a long and checkered aerspace history. Returning from the day at Promontory, Team Whooz stopped by this complex to look over the rocketry display out front by the highway.
Sign One, direction one. This roadside sign is the first of a sequence that harks back to the Burma Shave roadside jingles of mid-20th century America. These signs, apparently placed by Thiokol, show a different safety-related verse in each driving direction. Enjoy!
Sign Two, direction one.
Sign Three, direction one.
Sign Four, direction one.
Sign Five, direction one. This is the tag line that would have said "Burma Shave!" in the original advertising campaign.
